San Antonio Readies for 23rd Annual Valero Alamo Bowl

Shanna Smith |

San Antonio offers football fans a multitude of holiday events and activities to fill their days and nights while in town for the 23rd annual Valero Alamo Bowl featuring the TCU Horned Frogs and the Oregon Ducks on Jan. 2, 2016, at the Alamodome.

Plan a few extra days before and after the Alamo Bowl to experience the sights and sounds of the holiday season in San Antonio, including one of the nation’s largest New Year’s Eve celebrations that turns the city’s famed downtown into a giant street party featuring live music, food and family fun. Admission is free.

San Antonio also features its historic River Walk, aglow with thousands of holiday lights leading the way to restaurants, nightspots, shops and galleries.  An equally impressive sight is the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas, which will be the centerpiece of the New Year’s Eve festivities.  There, as the New Year is celebrated, fireworks will be launched.

During the day, delve into the history of Texas at the Alamo. Located within walking distance to the Alamodome and many downtown hotels, the Alamo is one of the city’s five Spanish colonial missions that earlier this year were designated as a World Heritage Site, the first in Texas and only the 23rd in the United States. All are open to the public free of charge. For a deep-rooted immersion into San Antonio’s rich culture, grab a trolley to Market Square, the nation’s largest Mexican market. Wander through shops stocked with everything from pearls to piñatas and dine in family-owned Tex-Mex cafes.

San Antonio is also known as a phenomenal golf destination with more than 50 courses, including layouts designed by Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye and A.W. Tillinghast. Challenging courses vary from golf resorts ranked among the best in the world to old quarries reincarnated into scenic challenges.  With temperatures typically temperate during December in San Antonio, it’s a great time to hit the links.
