SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 13, 2018) – Artpace Chalk It Up will celebrate its 15th anniversary of brightening up downtown San Antonio on Saturday, October 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The free event showcases artists and raises funds for arts programming while promoting downtown San Antonio as a thriving art and culture destination. Artpace anticipates more than 25,000 attendees will come to the festival’s exciting new footprint along redesigned Main Avenue and historic Houston Street. For the first time, Chalk It Up will take place right outside Artpace’s front door.

This year’s featured artists are Borderland Collective, whose Chalk It Up project will be an extension of their Artpace exhibition One to Another. The exhibition explores the global migration crisis through the lens of collecting personal stories and presenting multimedia narratives. Highlighted San Antonio-based artists this year include Jose Balli, Sarah Barcus, Lucas Dooley, Raul Gonzalez, Justin Parr, Katie Pell, Jeremiah Teutsch, and Nancy Wood.

Chalk It Up Chair Alexandra Cavazos, Director of Business Development at AC Financial, has been working behind the scenes for six months to orchestrate fundraising efforts for the event. “Our 15th anniversary promises to be the best yet," said Cavazos. "This festival embodies the spirit that art brings to our community while showcasing our city’s creative talent! Envisioned in 2004 as a fundraiser event, Chalk It Up has grown to be one of San Antonio’s most beloved fall festivals."

Chalk It Up was recognized in 2017 as the “Best Downtown Event” by the Centropolitan awards in part because of the many ways in which people can engage with the festival. Artpace encourages attendees to become artists for a day in the H-E-B Freestyle Zones and work on a collaborative, city-block-sized mural. Kids of all ages can take part in hands-on activities with Artpace’s many community partners, including a spin on the Artpace-commissioned, Spirograph-inspired, Chalka Khan. There will also be plenty of great food trucks and live music all day from the KRTU 91.7 Jazz Main Stage.

Over 50 local student groups will participate in the Team Works competition to create original murals. Sponsors and businesses will once again compete in their own mural contest with the Corporate Competition. Materials for the festival, including most of the chalk, are donated by local art-supply fixture Herweck’s.

Artpace Chalk It Up is presented by Argo Group with additional support from Valero Energy Foundation, Centro San Antonio, H-E-B, Spurs Entertainment, and Official Transportation partner, VIA. The fundraiser supports free, year-round contemporary art programming at Artpace. Funds from the festival also support the Artpace Teen Council, an intensive afterschool program serving area high school students.

Prospective sponsors can contact Artpace’s Associate Director of Development Amy Austin at aaustin@artpace.org for details about how to become involved with Chalk It Up.

ABOUT ARTPACE

Artpace San Antonio is a nonprofit residency program which supports regional, national, and international artists in the creation of new art. As a catalyst for artistic expression, we engage local communities with global art practices and experiences.

Since 1995, Artpace has welcomed more than 270 artists and curators through its renowned International Artist-in-Residence program. Annually, Artpace hosts three residencies, which each feature one Texas-based artist, one national artist, and one international artist, who are selected by a notable guest curator. Each eight-week residency culminates in a two-month exhibition on site. The mission of this program is to provide artists with unparalleled resources that allow them to experiment with new ideas and take provocative risks.
