SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 7, 2017) – Today, Artpace announces its 14th annual Chalk It Up to be held in downtown San Antonio on Saturday, October 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free, contemporary arts festival has expanded its footprint to now include Travis Park, Houston Street, and Jefferson Street, turning seven downtown city blocks into a collaborative work of chalk art. Chalk It Up showcases local artists and raises funds for art education while promoting downtown San Antonio as a destination with a thriving arts and culture scene. This year’s featured artists are Stuart Allen and Cade Bradshaw of Bridge Projects, who will draw inspiration from their upcoming Artpace installation, LIFT: An exhibition of kites.

Artpace Chalk It Up is presented by Argo Group with additional support from Valero Energy Foundation, Centro San Antonio, Frost Bank, HEB, Reyes Automotive Group, Santikos Entertainment, Whataburger, and VIA. Chalk It Up aims to raise funds through sponsorships to benefit Artpace’s educational programming. Artpace focuses on the development of young, creative leaders through programs such as the Artpace Teen Council, an intensive afterschool program serving area high school students. The mission of Artpace Chalk It Up and Artpace’s educational programs is to cultivate passion and awareness of the benefits of engaging with the arts.

“All funds raised through sponsorships will support Artpace’s unique educational programs," said Allison Reyes, 2017 co-chair of Artpace Chalk It Up. "As San Antonio continues its rapid development into a world class city, arts and culture need to be at the forefront of that conversation. Artpace and Chalk It Up lay the groundwork for a public engaged in the arts."

Artpace Chalk It Up encourages attendees to become artists for a day in the freestyle area and work on a collaborative, city block-sized mural. Children can take part in hands-on activities with Artpace’s many community partners, inspiring innovation. 50 local student groups will play a significant role at Chalk It Up by participating in our “Team Works” competition to create original murals. Registration for Team Works is available at artpace.org.

Building on the success of Team Works, for the first time this year Artpace will host a Corporate Competition to allow sponsors and other businesses the opportunity to realize their creative potential. Businesses and corporations with a passion for the arts will get twenty square feet of sidewalk or street for a team of up 10 to prove that their company is the most creative team in town.

San Antonio’s network of local artists, chosen from Artpace’s Texas Open Call list, will create chalk masterpieces. Guests are invited to dance while they draw as bands and DJs perform and entertain throughout the day at the KRTU 91.7 Jazz Main Stage. San Antonio’s finest food trucks will be in attendance to offer fresh local food to hungry chalk artists of all ages.
